Moving is stressful. But it doesn’t have to be.

In fact, there are several ways that you can make your next move easier, whether you’re moving across town or across the country. And we’ve got you covered! In today’s blog, Bird’s Moving & Storage will be sharing 6 moving and packing tips to ensure your next move is organized and stress-free.

6 Moving Hacks for a Stress-Free Move

1. Purge first

When you’re moving, it can be tempting to just throw everything into boxes, place them on a moving truck and drive away. But doing so surely won’t provide you with the fresh start you’re after.

Instead, take a hard look at what’s in your house and ensure you only bring what matters. This can be hard! The thought of parting with old memories, or even just things that have been sitting around your home for years may seem like a painful process. But remember: if you don’t love it, or if you haven’t used it in over a year, then don’t bring it along with you. You’ll thank yourself in the long run.

2. Plan the layout of your new home

Planning the layout of your new home before move-in day is a great way to get a jumpstart on settling into your new place. It’s also one of the easiest ways to ensure you get settled in as quickly and effortlessly as possible.

You can start by measuring the space available in your future home, making sure to include the location of outlets, vents, lights, and other installations that are difficult to move. Then measure your furniture as precisely as possible. Once you have all your measurements, it’s time to start planning the home of your dreams!

3. Create an inventory list and colour code boxes

When you’re moving, it’s easy to feel like you’re going to forget something. After all, you’ve got a lot to keep track of.

One of the best ways to stay organized and avoid this is to create an inventory list, or some sort of packing checklist for moving, and colour code your packing boxes. For example, you could colour-code your kitchen appliances red, bathroom items green, and so on – and then write down which room each item will go in on a list you keep with the box. This way, when it comes time to unpack everything, you’ll know exactly where everything goes without having to rummage through each box individually.

4. Pack your belongings skillfully & efficiently: best ways to pack for moving

As one of Niagara’s premiere moving and packing companies, we’ve compiled the best ways to pack to ensure your move is stress-free and seamless.

  • Always pack heavier items on the bottom.
  • Stuff your packing boxes with socks, scarves, and pillowcases for additional cushioning.
  • Pack small items in small boxes before placing them in a larger box.
  • Label all boxes – big or small.
  • When packing essentials make sure to label “load last” or “unload first,” to make obtaining essentials a cakewalk when you arrive.
  • Avoid using standard garbage bags for packing sheets and clothing. Instead, opt for heavy-duty garbage bags or consider doubling up.

5. Take photos of any furniture that requires disassembling and tape hardware to the bottom

Packing for a move is stressful enough without having to worry about putting your furniture back together again.

Do yourself a favour, as you pack for your big move, take photos of any furniture you take apart. Make sure to take photos of how you had them in your old place as a guide to how to put them back together in your new place. This way you’ll have a visual reference for how everything goes back together when you arrive at your new place, ensuring a stress-free reassemble.

It’s also not a bad idea to tape all required hardware to the bottom of the furniture to avoid aimlessly searching for it when you arrive at your new place.

6. Pack clothes like a pro

When it comes to packing your clothes for moving day, there are many options. You can pack folded clothes in cardboard boxes, suitcases, or even leave them in dressers – as long as it doesn’t make the dresser too heavy to move.

Just like your clothes, your shoes also need to be protected. You don’t want your heels and buckles to damage other shoes, and you definitely don’t want dirt from one pair to mess up the rest. Safeguard your shoes by placing them individually and wrapping them in tissue paper or bubble wrap. You can also stuff socks into your shoes to help them hold their shape.

7. Pack an overnight bag

Chances are when you arrive at your new place, you’re not going to be able to rummage through all the boxes and find the things you need. That’s why it’s important to pack an overnight bag with the essentials.

Here are a few necessities you’ll want to include in your overnight bag:

  • A roll of toilet paper
  • Medications
  • Phone charger
  • Pyjamas
  • Toiletries including toothbrush and toothpaste
  • A change of clothes
  • Instant coffee
  • Snacks
  • Toolbox for furniture assembly
